President Trump reneges on "America First" campaign promise
In his 2019 State of the Union speech, President Trump reneged on his "America First" campaign promise. Instead of insisting that American corporations hire American workers at prevailing wages, Trump said he wants legal immigrants coming to our country "in the largest numbers ever." This is an abrupt change in policy, and it does not bode well for American workers.
What it does do is provide corporate interests with cheap foreign labor at the expense of American workers.
As noted in the article, Trump Stands By His SOTU Demand For 'Largest Numbers Ever' Of Legal Immigration: 'We Need People', by Chris Menahan, InformationLiberation, February 7, 2019:
Americans are unemployed. American workers will work - for the prevailing American wage. But that's not good enough for corporate interests.
How many cheap foreign workers does corporate American really need? When is enough enough? U.S. immigrant population hit a record 43.7 million in 2016:

Here is where we are headed, and it isn't pretty. This is the legacy we are bequeathing to our children:
Patriotic Americans have been forced to support the lesser of two evils for decades. It has gotten us - and America - nowhere.
Trump's announcement of promoting more immigration is real. It's not a chess move. It cannot be a trial balloon, because by stating this position four times now, he has already popped the balloon and alienated his base of patriotic Americans.
Trump: you promised us "America First - which presumably meant Americans first." You lied.

Trump Reverses Wage-Boosting Campaign Commitment, Demands More Legal Immigration: ‘We Need People’, by John Binder, Breitbart, February 6, 2019:
... Currently, the U.S. imports more than a million legal immigrants annually, with the vast majority deriving from chain migration, whereby newly naturalized citizens can bring an unlimited number of foreign relatives to the country. In 2017, the foreign-born population reached a record high of 44.5 million.
The U.S. is on track to import about 15 million new foreign-born voters in the next two decades should current legal immigration levels continue. Those 15 million new foreign-born voters include about eight million who will arrive in the country through chain migration. This booming legal immigrant population has not only rapidly shifted the demographics of the nation, but research indicates it will hand over all electoral dominance to Democrats in a matter of decades....
“I need people coming in because we need people to run the factories and plants and companies that are moving back in,” Trump said. “We need people.”...
Trump to regional reporters on his SOTU claim he wants immigrants coming to the U.S. “in the largest numbers ever.”
Q: Is that a change in your policy?
A: “Yes, because we need people in our country because our unemployment numbers are so low…” pic.twitter.com/YZYjYkTl4I

The statements are a break from the president’s commitment in 2015, 2016, 2017, when he continuously advocated for reducing overall legal immigration to raise the wages of American workers.
While more than a million legal immigrants continue being admitted to the U.S. to take coveted American jobs, there remains 6.5 million Americans who are unemployed, 12.9 percent of whom are teenagers, and 6.8 percent of whom are black Americans....
Trump Indicates End of ‘Hire American’ Policy, May Invite More Foreign Workers, by Neil Munro, Breitbart, February 7, 2019.
... The legislators are expected to draft a compromise by February 15 that can expand several migration-related programs which allow employers to import cheap, temporary “visa workers” instead of hiring Americans at market rates, he said....
One of the draft visa-worker expansions is dubbed “country caps.” It would remove diversity provisions in immigration law to allow employers to offer citizenship to roughly 100,000 Indian outsourcing workers each year if they agree to cheaply replace the American graduates who are now working in well-paid software, accounting, design, engineering, medicine, and education careers. The panel is expected to draft their plan by February 15....
