Have you seen the population pyramids for America, Russia, and Japan? This 5 minute Ted video explains Population pyramids: Powerful predictors of the future. From the video description:

Population statistics are like crystal balls -- when examined closely, they can help predict a country's future (and give important clues about the past). Yet population pyramids only go so far in explaining population growth. As a case in point, American women voluntarily reached replacement level fertility (2.1 children per woman) in 1972. Yet our population is project to double this century.

Why?
