America's six month taste of socialism

The Covid-19 China virus has allowed power hungry Democrat governors to effectively shut down state economies and wall people inside their own homes - all purportedly for the public good. Their underlying premise is that free individuals are unable to decide for themselves how much freedom they will trade for a feeling of safety.

Politicians have taken it upon themselves to decide when we can go out, when and where we can go to work, church, and school, and what we have to wear.

Few recognize the significance of what transpired and the dangers it portends for our Republic.

We are a nation of Americans, not a country of subjects. Six months into the Wuhan Virus experience, we have an opportunity to reflect on the taste of socialism we have just been served. How do we like it so far? Will we vote for more of it in the 2020 election?

Here are excerpts from several articles that reflect on that experience after only a few months of political domination:

The incompatibility of socialism and liberty, by Klaus Rohrich, Canada Free Press, May 6, 2020:

So, how do you like your free, 60-day trial of socialism so far? Yeah, me neither, and to think that this is just a free sample, imagine what it could look like when you’ve enrolled in the full program?...

Nothing happens unless The State makes it happen.

What we, in the so-called ‘Free World’ are now experiencing as a “temporary” state of affairs, is the permanent state of affairs in a large part of the rest of the world, particularly countries that fall under the socialist banner. The people of China, with a population somewhere on the order of 1.48 billion, have been living under these (and worse) conditions since WWII, as do the people of North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, etc....

Philosophically, socialism doesn’t believe in personal responsibility. Thus, socialist states require coercion to gain obedience from the people....

The sweet tune of socialism, like that of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, promises all the things that you lack and many others enjoy so effortlessly, if you just adhere to the precepts of socialism: “From each according to his ability; to each according to his needs.”

So, the only question is who determines one’s needs and who determines one’s abilities? Those are basically simple answers; both the peoples’ needs and abilities are determined by the party or the current cadre running the party.

That’s why so many wealthy politicians and celebrities are all in the can for socialism because they are at the top of the heap and it doesn’t affect them....

Moving Beyond COVID-19 into Freedom--or Illusions of Freedom?, by Dennis Jamison, Canada Free Press, May 7, 2020:

... The question that must be asked is whether there will be serious attention and some coherent, unified response to the advance of the Socialist-Communist agenda within America now, or whether citizens are going to retreat from a “lost cause.” There are now many citizens who have chosen sides in the carefully promulgated political divisions in the nation. These divisions were exacerbated within the last decade by Barack Obama and his puppet masters as well as by the wealthy globalist elite.

At the end of April, an opinion piece by Joseph Ladapo in the Wall Street Journal examined the nation’s battle against COVID-19 gradually morphing into a battle over civil liberties as America struggles to move into the battle for economic recovery. Ladapo notes the recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, which indicates that most of the American public supports the shelter in place mandates for their respective states. The article, “The Looming Civil-Liberties Battle,” is available for those who have a subscription to the Wall Street Journal, but many people already see the ‘writing on the wall.’...

The five governors [who did not shut down their states] are Mark Gordon (R-WY), Asa Hutchinson (R-AR), Mike Parson (R-MO) Pete Ricketts (R-NE), and Kim Reynolds (R-IA). They are indeed all Republicans, and it is so very interesting that they are all looked upon by the mainstream media as out of step with the “disaster narrative” that the MSM currently promotes. The MSM favored model proves more autocratic as they tend to be more willing to accept, or to promote the extended shutdowns advocated by other governors like Gavin Newsom (D-CA), Andrew Cuomo (D-NY), Jay Inslee (D-WA), or Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI). These governors are holding out for lockdown extensions In their states until mid-May or the end of May....

Sadly, many of the younger generations believe that the basis of “Socialism” is being socially active or conscious of the important social issues. The historically challenged may have a hard time to comprehend socialism, and often when challenged, younger people who are requested to define it intellectually fail to define it comprehensively. Those who misunderstand socialism may do well to look around and see what it is like during the lockdown. Some U.S. states as the lockdown is enforced, exhibit mild forms of Socialism. The persecuted people of China and the poverty ravaged nations of North Korea and Venezuela are testimony to the maturation of the Socialist agenda into full blown Communism....

Do We Still Have a Constitution?, by Andrew P. Napolitano, Lew Rockwell, May 7, 2020:

I have been taking some heat from friends and colleagues for my steadfast defense of personal liberties and my arguments that the Constitution — when interpreted in accordance with the plain meaning of its words, and informed by history — does not permit the government to infringe upon personal freedoms, no matter the emergency or pandemic. For those who agree with me, worry not. We will persevere. For those who trust the government, worry a lot. You are not in good hands.

The purpose of the Constitution is to establish the government and to limit it. Some of the limitations are written in the Constitution itself. Most of the limitations that pertain to personal freedoms are found in the Bill of Rights — the first 10 amendments.

These amendments were ratified to restrain the federal government from infringing upon personal liberties. Since the enactment of the 14th Amendment in 1868, and subsequent litigation, these amendments, for the most part, restrain the states as well. The courts have characterized these protected liberties as fundamental.

So, the rights to thought, speech, press, assembly, worship, self-defense, privacy, travel, property ownership, interstate commercial activities and fair treatment from government are plainly articulated or rationally inferred in the first eight amendments. The Ninth is a catchall, which declares that the enumeration of rights in the first eight shall not mean that there are no other rights that are fundamental, and the government shall not disparage those other rights. The Tenth reflects that the states have reserved powers to themselves...

Natural rights collectively constitute the moral ability and sovereign authority of every human being to make personal choices — free from government interference or government permission....

The current interferences with the exercise of rights protected by the Bill of Rights devolve around travel, assembly, interstate commercial activities and the exercise of religious beliefs. These infringements have all come from state governors who claim the power to do so, and they raise three profound constitutional issues...

Today, we are governed by dangerous men and women. For they have taken away our ability to make personal choices, and they have used force to compel compliance...

Coronavirus is Democrats' latest excuse to attack the Second Amendment, by Rep. Kevin Hern, Washington Examiner, May 07, 2020:

The Second Amendment declares that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” For nearly 250 years, these words have held up. Despite numerous wars, changing cultures and economies, our Second Amendment has remained strong. The directive “shall not be infringed” is powerful; there are no footnotes, exceptions, or clarifications — not even for coronavirus....

Not everyone sees it that way. With H.R. 5717, the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act, Democrats want to leave Americans defenseless at our most vulnerable moment.

H.R. 5717 ensures the only firearms in a community will be obtained illegally by bad actors. It dictates every aspect of gun-ownership and places burdensome regulations on where an individual can store a firearm in their own home....

Even more, H.R. 5717 creates a nationwide gun registry, implements a national “red flag” confiscation policy, forbids those under 21 from obtaining a firearm, rations the number of guns you can purchase within 30 days, bans almost all semi-automatic weapons, and expands gun-free zones. Most appallingly, the legislation creates financial obstacles for economically disadvantaged Americans wanting to exercise their right to bear arms by imposing a 30% tax on firearms and a 50% tax on ammunition....

Now, more than ever, Americans are seeing the dismal results of power-hungry politicians' work. Across the country, power is being abused to suppress the long-held rights of our people. “It’s for your own good,” we’re told, as if we are children reprimanded by an all-knowing parent....
